A 20 year wrongful conviction equals 7,300 days in prison. Now, pause for a moment and absorb the weight of that time. It’s not just a number; it’s an entire existence, slipping away second by second.
Imagine the torment of watching your life evaporate. Picture the stolen dreams, vanished opportunities, the despair of an endless stretch within cold, unforgiving walls.
This is not a mere thought experiment; it’s the reality faced by the countless thousands of wrongfully convicted souls caged within the system.
The A Life For A Life Coalition is more than an organization; we’re a movement dedicated to reshaping the very foundations of justice, equality, and community safety. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we are committed to breaking the playground-to-prison pipeline and dismantling systemic injustices that have long plagued marginalized communities. Our goal is to create a fair, safe, and equitable criminal legal system for all.
Our mission begins with awareness. We aim to enlighten the public about the profound and often devastating impact the criminal legal system has on our communities, especially on young lives vulnerable to being funneled from schools into prisons. By fostering understanding and spreading knowledge, we create a path for meaningful reform and constructive change.
We are staunch advocates for abolishing the illicit practices that permeate the justice system and lead to wrongful convictions. Our fight extends to exonerating the wrongfully convicted and holding those responsible for such injustices accountable. We envision a criminal legal system that truly serves the people, where those entrusted to uphold justice are themselves held accountable.
The truth is undeniable: our legal system poses a greater threat to communities of color than any terrorist organization on the planet, because it is plagued by illicit practices, it lacks effective oversight, and it maintains a culture of unaccountability.
Let’s be clear: the threat to our communities is real and urgent.
The system is unjust because of the deliberate malfeasance of those we entrust to run the system – not human frailties.
There are no checks and balances that protect individuals against official misconduct.
“Criminal liability for causing an innocent man to lose decades of his life behind bars is practically unheard of.” — Chief Justice Alex Kozinsky in U.S. v. Olsen 737 F. 3d, 625 (9th Cir. 2013)
Our criminal justice system is plagued by racism and illicit practices, but there is hope for change. The A Life For A Life Accountability Act is the most comprehensive criminal justice reconstruction bill to date, and we stand behind it. This bill will create an independent entity to police the system, eradicate the Thirteenth Amendment’s punishment clause, end mass incarceration, and provide a path for the release of those incarcerated during the War on Drugs. It will also criminalize official misconduct and put an end to judicial lynchings once and for all.
The time for action is now, and criminal liability is the answer. We cannot let those who abuse their power go unpunished any longer. Criminal liability will allow us to prosecute old injustices and deter future abuses. It’s time for those who have been entrusted to administer justice to be held accountable for their actions.
Let’s make a statement with our support of The A Life For A Life Accountability Act. It’s time to demand justice and equality for all. We cannot afford to wait any longer. Join us in our fight for change and together, we can make a difference.
